An exquisite French antique holy water font crucifix dating back to the late 1800s, in Napoleon III style. The champlevé enamelwork decoration has a JHS monogram in the centre of the cross and the benitier (basin) is in good working order, revealing a white enamelled interior for holy water.
Champlevé describes a type of enamelwork, in which hollows made in a metal surface are filled with coloured enamels.
The Onyx base is mounted on bronze with an original hanging loop. As the pictures show, there has been some damage to the based, however it remains supported by the mount.
A truly stunning historical relic, and rare collectible piece of religious art.
